From permanent storage in basalt to scalable e-methanol, Iceland is stress-testing a carbon management playbook ready for the world's clean energy transition
Iceland’s carbon solutions aren’t the finish line - they’re the prototype. And as the world races toward net-zero commitments, what works here can work elsewhere.
Iceland is rapidly cementing its reputation as a global pioneer in carbon management. But this isn't just about a small nation safeguarding its pristine environment; it's about a carbon playbook being tested and refined under real-world conditions. Leveraging its unique geothermal resources and pioneering spirit, Iceland is developing solutions in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) that are inherently transferable and scalable.

The most striking innovation coming out of Iceland is the permanent sequestration of carbon dioxide. At the heart of this revolution is Carbfix, an Icelandic company founded in 2007 with the singular goal of making carbon dioxide vanish - for good. By dissolving CO2 (and H2S) in water and pumping it into the Earth’s basaltic bedrock, Carbfix accelerates a natural mineralization process. Within roughly two years, about 95 % of the carbon becomes solid carbonate minerals.
Global Scalability: While Iceland's geology, with its vast basalt reservoirs, provides an ideal setting, the technology isn't limited to the island. Basalt is the most common volcanic rock on Earth, covering roughly 10% of continental landmasses. The Carbfix Atlas tool actively maps the global distribution of these reactive rock formations, demonstrating that this mineralization process can be adapted to basalt-rich regions globally, offering an enormous potential for permanent carbon storage worldwide.
The scalability of Iceland’s solutions is underscored by its partnerships. Swiss company Climeworks chose Iceland for its first and largest operational Direct Air Capture and Storage (DAC+S) plants, Orca and Mammoth. These facilities pull CO2 directly from the ambient air, powered by clean, renewable geothermal energy, with the captured CO2 then delivered to Carbfix for permanent mineral storage.
Exporting Expertise: Climeworks is not confining its expertise to Iceland. The Icelandic collaboration has served as the essential prototype, validating the technology's effectiveness and paving the way for its rapid global deployment.
Beyond permanent storage, Iceland is also pioneering carbon utilization. Carbon Recycling International (CRI) uses its proprietary Emissions-to-Liquids (ETL) technology to transform captured CO2 and green hydrogen into renewable methanol, branded as Vulcanol. This methanol is a valuable commodity used in everything from transport fuel to chemical production.
Worldwide Impact: CRI is a perfect example of Icelandic innovation with immediate global relevance. The company is already supplying its technology to large-scale projects, including a landmark agreement with the Tianying Group for one of the largest e-methanol plants in China, with a first-phase capacity of 170,000 tons per year. By taking industrial emissions that would otherwise pollute the atmosphere and turning them into a marketable, sustainable fuel, CRI demonstrates a compelling circular economy model that is ready to be replicated.



Iceland is not creating a closed-off “carbon island.” It is operating a laboratory where the world's carbon solutions are being proven under real conditions. The technologies work. The business models are viable. The solutions are transferable.
As nations grapple with climate commitments, Iceland offers more than inspiration: it offers a proven playbook. The question isn't whether these solutions can scale globally. Iceland has already answered that. The question is how quickly the world will adopt them.
