While the world deliberates, this island nation has become a testing ground for innovation, turning its geology and geothermal energy into a real, working carbon management sector. This isn't about small pilots or marketing pitches; it's about what's running right now.

Iceland's pioneering status comes from having multiple, science-backed technologies operating at scale:
Carbfix
This Icelandic technology doesn't just store CO₂, it dissolves the gas in water and injects it deep into volcanic rock, where it naturally turns into stone. Since 2014, Carbfix has permanently stored tens of thousands of tons of CO₂, with the process taking as little as two years instead of the centuries traditional storage requires. This proves that permanent, safe carbon storage works and can scale.
Climeworks
Running the world's largest commercial direct air capture (DAC) plants in Iceland, Climeworks uses clean geothermal energy to pull CO₂ straight from the air before sending it to Carbfix for storage. Operating on 100% renewable energy, these facilities avoid the energy problems that challenge similar operations elsewhere.
Carbon Recycling International (CRI)
Going beyond storage, CRI takes captured CO₂ and renewable hydrogen to make renewable methanol. This shows how carbon utilization works: turning waste CO₂ into clean fuel and chemical feedstock.
